Spring Buds Program

In 1989, the China Women’s Federation and the China Children and Teenagers’ Fund (CCTF) created the Spring Buds Program. The program raises funds to help girls who will or have dropped out of school due to poverty to continue their studies. The program also helps improve the school conditions and education levels in areas affected by poverty, and assists the government in developing education and welfare levels for children and teenagers.

To date, the Spring Buds Program has funded more than 2.8 million girls, contributed financially to build 1,402 Spring Buds schools and has provided practical training to more than 529,000 girls.

Continuing efforts to support the program

In 2000, CPA Canada members (previously CGA Canada members) started to participate and donate to the Spring Buds Program. From 2009 to 2015, the Beijing chapter has worked closely with CCTF to introduce this program to our members, and set up an annual donation target of CNY60,000, which will allow us to open a Spring Buds class under the name of CPA Canada. Over the years, we have raised CNY360,700, opened six Spring Buds classes and have funded 300 girls and boys in poverty-stricken families to help them continue their studies. The six Spring Buds classes are located in China’s underdeveloped areas, especially in the northwest region.

2016 update

We sent out a donation call for the 2016 Spring Buds Program in late March, and received prompt responses and warm feedback from our members. We reached our donation target of CNY64,200 in one month. We are now working with CCTF to select the location and girls to open our seventh CPA Canada Spring Buds Class.

Stars Youth Development Program

In early 2015, we established a co-operation agreement with Stars Youth Development Center, a famous not-for-profit organization (NFP) based in Guangzhou. Stars concentrates on children’s literacy and leadership development programs in China. We provided Stars with a team of volunteer professional accountants with solid financial and accounting management experience to assist with the NFP’s daily management. Since the volunteer team was featured in Stars’ recruitment materials, there has been an increase in the number of accounting candidates wanting to volunteer. According to Stars’ CEO, “’accountant’ has become the most sought after position in Stars’ recruitment.”

Because of this successful co-operation, we would like to further strengthen our relationship with Stars in 2016, assisting with the development of their internal standard operation progress and initiating a budget management system. Furthermore, we will create similar arrangements with other NFPs to develop high-level accounting and international management standards in China’s charitable industries.
