UPDATE FROM CPA CANADA FOR HONG KONG MEMBERS

Published: Thursday, April 15, 2021

We would like to inform you of some changes to CPA Canada’s Hong Kong member support model.

With over 1,600 Canadian CPAs living and working in the region, CPA Canada is committed to delivering valuable information in today’s rapidly changing environment.

Over the past few weeks, we have been exploring ways to best meet the needs of members in Hong Kong, whether it be administrative requirements or accessing leading-edge professional development content.

Effective April 2021, we will begin the transition to a new member support model led directly by CPA Canada International as we phase out the volunteer-led Hong Kong Chapter Board.

Our organization would like to express its gratitude to the dedicated volunteers who served on the Board over the years. Their contributions are greatly appreciated, and these individuals played a significant role in helping CPA Canada serve members in the region.

This change will not impact the support that you have come to rely on. CPA Canada International will continue to deliver high-quality virtual learning opportunities to help you stay ahead of the curve and meet your CPD requirements.

As a reminder, CPA Canada offers a wide selection of online learning (webinars, virtual classrooms and podcasts) and free resources to assist you in your careers. Over the coming months, you will receive communications on other upcoming events and online opportunities.

CPA Canada Announces New Reciprocal Membership Agreement with HKICPA

Published: June 1, 2018

A Reciprocal Membership Arrangement (RMA) between all provincial/regional Canadian CPA bodies and the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA), a Global Accounting Alliance (GAA) member body, came into effective on June 1, 2018.  The agreement provides for increased recognition of qualified professional accountants and identifies an expedited pathway by which one body's members are eligible to obtain the credential of the other. "The signing of this agreement clearly demonstrates the commitment of the Canadian CPA profession to help advance labour mobility through international recognition," says Joy Thomas, president and CEO, CPA Canada. "These agreements help our members by reducing barriers to global career opportunities as well as attract top talent to Canada which contributes to economic growth as well as social well-being."
The objective of the RMA is to set out the basis on which members of the HKICPA may become reciprocal members of a provincial or regional CPA body, and vice versa. The terms of the RMA shall be for a period of five years.

HKICPAs seeking the Canadian CPA designation are required to be members in good standing with the HKICPA. They are eligible to obtain the Canadian CPA designation if they completed the education and training route of the HKICPA, or a pathway under approved credit or other scheme arrangements that does not include exemption from the final qualifying exam of the certification. Find out more information at this link

Canadian CPAs seeking a HKICPA credential are eligible to obtain a HKICPA credential if they are CPA members in good standing and completed any of the legacy (CA, CGA, CMA) programs or the post-unification CPA certification program. CPA members who completed the education, examination and experience requirements of the legacy CGA or CMA program must have completed two years of full-time or equivalent part-time, relevant post-qualifying experience that involve the use of accounting, attest, management advisory, financial advisory, tax or consulting skills. The experience may be from employment in public practice, private industry, non-profit or government. A Verification of Post Qualification Experience Certificate form has been developed for legacy CGA and CMA members seeking a credential from HKICPA. For more information, visit here
