CPA preparatory courses (formerly CPA PREP)

CPA preparatory courses provide the knowledge requirement for admission to the CPA Professional Education Program (CPA PEP) and entry and technical courses for CPA Canada’s Advanced Certificate in Accounting and Finance (ACAF).

If you are seeking admission to the CPA PEP but lack some or all of the necessary prerequisites for entry (based on the transcript evaluation conducted by your provincial/regional CPA body), you are able to take the CPA preparatory courses needed to gain the knowledge requirement you are missing. You only have to complete the courses you require.

If you are a CPA Canada ACAF student, you can complete the CPA preparatory courses to fulfill the five entry and six technical courses that are part of the ACAF program structure.

There are 14 CPA preparatory courses. The sequence in which you take them is important as some courses are prerequisites for others. The Business Law and Information Technology courses can be taken at any time, subject to availability. Each course ends with an examination.

The courses use a blend of learning formats that include:

  • self-study
  • online
  • instructor-facilitated
  • locally based-exam offerings

Self-study courses:

The following courses are offered online on a self-study basis. Upon registration, but no earlier than 12 weeks prior to the exam, students will be provided with all necessary study materials. Students must receive a minimum grade of 50 per cent in order to successfully pass each course. These courses include:

  • Introductory Financial Accounting
  • Introductory Management Accounting
  • Economics
  • Statistics
  • Business Law
  • Information Technology

Note: For students pursuing their CPA designation, the self-study courses are also referred to as non-core courses.

Instructor-facilitated courses:

The following courses are led by instructors who are responsible for reviewing and providing feedback on course assignments and responding to student questions. Students must successfully complete or have exemption from the Introductory Financial Accounting and Introductory Management Accounting in order to enroll in any of the following courses:

  • Intermediate Financial Reporting 1
  • Intermediate Financial Reporting 2
  • Advanced Financial Reporting
  • Corporate Finance
  • Audit and Assurance
  • Taxation
  • Intermediate Management Accounting
  • Performance Management

Students must receive an overall grade of 60 per cent or higher in each instructor-facilitated course in order to successfully pass these courses.

Note: For students pursuing their CPA designation, the instructor-facilitated courses are also referred to as “core courses”.
